Tamil Nadu Agriculture Minister K S Sengottaiyan today released new crop varieties

Tamil Nadu Agriculture Minister K S Sengottaiyan today released new crop varieties, farm implements and technologies for the benefit of farmers living in different climatic conditions. Of the released Blackgram VBN 6, a 65-70 days duration crop with average yield of 871 Kg per hectare would be suitable for both rainfed and irrigated conditions, while TNAU sorghum hybrid CO5, a dry fodder with crop duration of 95-100 days, has been recommended for cultivation in almost all sorghum areas in the State. A medium slender, white rice, with a yield potential of 6173 Kg per hectare and moderately resistant, sheath rot, sheath blight under artificial conditions and also resistant to leaf folder and brown spot under field condition, TNAU Rice ADT 49, was recommended for all districts in Tamil Nadu, barring VIrudhunagar, Nilgiris, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram.The duration is 130 to 137 days. Sengottaiyan also released TNAU Rice Hybrid CO4, a medium duration hybrid with yield potential of 7348 kg/hec, suitable for cultivation as transplanted hybrid rice throughout the State, excepting Virudhunagar, Ramanad, Nilgiris and Sivaganga districts. Other crop varieties were TNAU Cumbu Hybrid CO9, TNAU Vegetable Cowpea PKM1, which is recommended in Nagerkoil, Salem, Trichy, Theni, Perambalur, Tiruvallur, Ariyalur, Madurai, Dindigul and Cuddalore districts The farm implements unveiled included self propelled flail mower for cutting grass and bushes, palmyrah tree climbing device and automatic portray sowing machine for vegetable nursery production and the management technologies include high density planting system in cashew, processing and value addition of sugarcane syrup, multigrain Adai mix and integrated pest and disease management package for silkworm among others. Sengottaiyan also conferred ”Velan Chemmal” award on five farmers, who excelled in profession by innovation in various technnologies and adoption of farm techniques, during which a large number of farmers from different districts, were present.
