The 149-year-old Dindigul Municipality here has started functioning as a Corporation.
The first Mayor of the Corporation, V. Marudha Raj, convened its first special meeting on Friday.
The meeting, which ended in 15 minutes, saw the passing of a single resolution without any protest from any member. The resolution thanked Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, Minister for Local Administration K.P. Munusamy and Minister for Power R. Viswanathan for upgrading Dindigul Municipality as a Corporation.
While addressing a function, the new Mayor assured the residents that he would take efforts to streamline drinking water supply.
Athoor Kamarajar dam, the main drinking water source to Dindigul town and the wayside villages, was being desilted to augment its storage capacity.
Similarly, desilting of all tanks in and around Dindigul was being taken up to improve the groundwater table.
All prime roads within the urban area would be widened and beautified with median lights, he said.
