Scope for development of agro-based infrastructure is bright in the district. With massive production of vegetables, cut flowers and fruits, demand for cold storage has been growing every year in the district.
Private people should come forward to establish cold storage facility, said Collector M. Vallalar.
Inaugurating a loan mela organised by Tamil Nadu Industrial Investment Corporation Limited here on Wednesday, he said that Kodaikanal would have a cold storage facility shortly. Such facility would enhance the income of farmers. At present cut-flower growers had been solely depending on cold storage facilities in Bangalore and Hosur, major cut-flower marketing centres.
Proposals had already been forwarded to the government for sanction. Demand for cold storage at Iyyalur, Oddanchatram and Nilakottai was high. With massive production of different varieties of flowers, youths could start agro-based industries including scent making units or jasmine oil manufacturing units.
Agro-processing industries were also very viable in the district.
Manufacturers could get all required raw materials near their factory premises.
The State and Central governments had been offering several concessions to start industries in rural areas. Youth should avail these benefits and adopt new strategies to start business, he added.
In his special address, TIDCO Manager P. Shanmugam said that Rs.42 crore had been allotted for this fiscal to sanction loans in the district.
Special capital grant subsidy of 15 per cent on plant and machineries would be given to entrepreneurs.
Dindigul branch had sanctioned Rs.19.8 crore as loan in the last financial year and disbursed Rs.17.78 crore.
Dindigul branch had the powers to sanction loans up to Rs.50 lakh to start industries and up to Rs.1 crore on recommendation of zonal loan sanctioning committee.
